Questions and answers
Studying in Turkey: what students ask before applying
Short answers to the most common questions. Your adviser will go through the details for your case.
Do I need to speak Turkish to study in Turkey?
No. Many universities teach whole programs in English. Turkish-taught programs ask for a Turkish language certificate, and most universities offer a one-year Turkish preparatory course.
Which exams do I need for a bachelor's degree in Turkey?
Most universities accept TR-YÖS, the exam for international applicants that ÖSYM holds twice a year. Many also accept SAT, IB, Abitur, GCE A-levels or Tawjihi. TR-YÖS and SAT results stay valid for two years, while school-leaving exams such as IB, Abitur and A-levels have no time limit. Each university sets its own minimum score.
What is the Turkish student residence permit?
It is the öğrenci ikamet izni, issued by the Turkish migration authority. You apply online after you enrol, while your visa or visa exemption is still valid. See the official guide (in Turkish).
Can international students work while studying in Turkey?
Yes, with a work permit. Associate and bachelor's students may apply only after their first year, and only for part-time work. Master's and PhD students do not have this limit.
How much does it cost to study and live in Turkey?
It depends on the university and the city. State universities charge international students within limits set each year, and foundation universities set their own fees. For living costs, METU estimates 12,000 to 18,000 Turkish lira a month for a student in an Ankara dormitory (June 2026).
Is a Turkish university degree recognised in my country?
Türkiye uses ECTS credits and gives every graduate a Diploma Supplement. Recognition at home is decided by your own country's education ministry, so we check its rules before you choose a university.
Can Turkademy help with the whole process?
Yes. We work with you from the first shortlist to your residence permit application, or help with a single step such as one application. For legal questions we refer you to a licensed lawyer in Türkiye.
