Key takeaways
- Decide where you will work before you pick a degree: staying in Türkiye, going home and moving to a third country each favour different fields.
- Every job for a foreigner needs a work permit filed by the employer, and the ministry expects five Turkish employees per foreign employee in most workplaces12.
- Engineers and architects must be paid at least four times the gross minimum wage for a permit, so employers hire foreigners mainly for skills that are scarce2.
- Software, industrial engineering, international trade, biomedical engineering and game design score best for graduates who want to stay in Türkiye.
- A year of medicine costs about $18,000 at the median list price, against about $5,550 for computer engineering4.
- Medicine, dentistry and pharmacy remain strong choices if you plan to work in your home country, but law and pharmacy practice in Türkiye are reserved for Turkish citizens67.

Start with one question: where will you work after graduating?
Most students ask which degree has the best future. A better first question is where you will work once you graduate, because the same degree can be the best or the worst choice depending on the answer.
Take medicine. If you plan to go home, a Turkish medical degree that your country recognises can lead to a well-paid career there. If you plan to stay in Istanbul, you need Turkish good enough for patients, a preliminary permit from the Ministry of Health and years of competition with Turkish doctors on a junior salary8.
After graduating
Where will you work?
Stay and work in Türkiye
Software, engineering, international trade, game design
Employers can justify a work permit for scarce technical skills and for your language and market knowledge.
Return to your home country
Medicine, dentistry, pharmacy, engineering
Your home market values the degree once it is recognised there, and you face no foreign work permit.
Move to a third country
Software, data, engineering taught in English
Skills that are the same everywhere travel best, and an English-taught degree is easier to have assessed abroad.
The rest of this guide focuses on the first path, because it is the hardest one and a wrong choice costs the most. The third path overlaps with it: a degree that makes you employable in Türkiye for a global skill usually makes you employable in Europe and the Gulf as well. If you plan to go home, check early how your country treats recognition of Turkish university degrees.
How Türkiye's job market works for an international graduate
To see which degrees win, ask why a Turkish employer would hire a foreigner instead of a Turkish graduate. Four forces shape the answer.
The employer has to justify hiring you
No foreigner may work in Türkiye without a work permit, and the employer applies for it1. The ministry's criteria expect at least five Turkish citizens on the payroll for each foreign employee in most workplaces. They also set minimum salaries: four times the gross minimum wage for engineers and architects, and twice the minimum wage for other specialist jobs2. In practice an employer hires a foreigner when that person brings something scarce: an in-demand technical skill, or the language and market knowledge of a country the company sells to.

Pay in Turkish lira loses value
Inflation in Türkiye has been high in recent years, so a salary in lira buys less each year when converted to dollars or euros. A job paid in foreign currency, at an exporter, an international company or remotely for clients abroad, protects you from that. Degrees whose skills are the same in every country, such as software, gain the most: if you cannot find the right job in Türkiye, you can work from Istanbul for a company in Europe.
Türkiye is the region's factory and crossroads
Türkiye's economy rests on industry and exports: cars and parts, household appliances, textiles, construction contracting abroad and logistics between Europe, Asia and the Middle East. Istanbul has also become one of the world's centres of mobile game development, and health tourism brings patients from the Middle East and Europe to Turkish hospitals. A degree that plugs into one of these engines has steady demand. One exception matters: the fast-growing defence industry is largely closed to foreigners.
Artificial intelligence moves tasks, not whole degrees
Routine work such as simple translation or standard reports is automated first. Work that needs hands-on skill, legal responsibility, human contact or the building of AI systems themselves lasts longer. The safest degrees are those whose graduates either build AI or use it as a tool to do physical and human work better.
A scorecard of twelve degrees for international students
We turned those four forces into four criteria and scored twelve popular fields from 1 (weak) to 5 (strong). Work in Türkiye asks how easily a foreign graduate finds an employer willing to file a work permit. Portability asks how useful the degree is outside Türkiye. AI resilience asks how much of the work is hard to automate. Value for money compares tuition with what the field earns in the first years.
| Field | Work in Türkiye | Portability | AI resilience | Value for money |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Software, computer engineering and AI | 5 | 5 | 4 | 5 |
| Industrial engineering and logistics | 4 | 4 | 4 | 5 |
| International trade, with your native language | 4 | 3 | 4 | 5 |
| Biomedical engineering | 4 | 4 | 5 | 4 |
| Digital game design | 4 | 5 | 3 | 4 |
| Mechatronics and electrical engineering | 4 | 4 | 4 | 4 |
| Tourism, hotel and health management | 3 | 3 | 4 | 4 |
| Architecture and interior architecture | 3 | 4 | 3 | 3 |
| Psychology | 2 | 3 | 4 | 3 |
| Medicine and dentistry | 1 | 5 | 5 | 2 |
| Pharmacy | 1 | 4 | 3 | 2 |
| Law | 1 | 2 | 3 | 2 |
The table shows that medicine is not a weak degree. It is strong on portability and AI resilience, but weak on the one criterion that decides whether you can stay in Türkiye. Pharmacy and law are harder still, because practising as a pharmacist and being admitted as a lawyer in Türkiye are reserved for Turkish citizens67.
A year of medicine costs about as much as three years of computer engineering at the median list price. Many private universities discount these prices for international students, so compare real offers with our tuition fees in Türkiye page before you decide.
Five degrees with the best job prospects for staying in Türkiye
Software, computer engineering and artificial intelligence
These fields score well on every criterion, because the skill is global and both Turkish companies and clients abroad pay for it. Choice is wide: 34 private universities in Istanbul teach computer or software engineering in English, and 12 offer a separate degree in artificial intelligence or data engineering3. Competition is strong too, so build a portfolio of real projects from your first year rather than relying on the diploma.
Industrial engineering and logistics
European companies are moving production from East Asia to countries closer to home, and Türkiye is one of them. That shift needs people who plan production lines, warehouses and transport. Industrial engineers do exactly that, and AI is their tool rather than their rival. 27 private Istanbul universities teach industrial engineering in English3.
International trade, combined with your native language
On its own this degree is ordinary. For an international student it carries a hidden advantage: a Turkish exporter selling to Iran, Iraq, the Gulf, Central Asia or Russia needs someone who knows that market's language and culture from the inside. That is exactly the scarce skill that justifies a work permit. Learn Turkish alongside the degree and you become hard to replace.
Biomedical engineering
Biomedical engineers work for medical device companies, large private hospitals and the health tourism industry, without the licence a doctor needs. The degree suits a student drawn to medicine who wants to stay in Türkiye, at about a third of the cost. Seven private Istanbul universities teach it in English3.
Digital game design
Istanbul's game studios work in English and hire internationally, so a foreigner is no outsider there. Nine private Istanbul universities teach digital game design in English3. Hiring is almost entirely portfolio-based, so this degree suits students who already make games.

Most of these programs are at private universities. Our guide to private universities in Türkiye compares them, and the universities in Istanbul page lists where each one is taught.
Specialist paths for students with a clear interest
These fields can lead to good careers, but they suit a narrower profile of student.
- Mechatronics and electrical engineering feed Türkiye's car, appliance and renewable energy industries. Many factories are outside Istanbul and work in Turkish, so they suit students who take Turkish seriously.
- Tourism, hotel and health management pay off when combined with your native language. A patient coordinator who speaks Persian or Arabic is valuable to an Istanbul hospital that treats foreign patients. Starting pay is lower than in engineering, but the way in is shorter.
- Gerontology, actuarial science and materials science fit Türkiye's ageing population and industry. Almost no private Istanbul university teaches them in English3, so most students reach them through a related bachelor's degree, such as economics or chemistry, and a master's.
- Architecture and interior architecture travel well to your home country and the Gulf, but practising as an architect in Türkiye is harder for foreigners, so they suit the second and third paths best.
Degrees to choose only with a plan to work outside Türkiye
Medicine, dentistry and pharmacy remain good choices for students who plan to go home. Settle two things before you enrol. First, these degrees cost two to three times as much as engineering4. Second, confirm that your country recognises the degree of that specific university. To stay in Türkiye as a doctor, a foreigner needs a preliminary permit from the Ministry of Health before the work permit, and usually a Turkish language exam8.
Law, nursing, physiotherapy and clinical psychology depend on Turkish and on local licences. Law in Türkiye trains you for the Turkish legal system, and only Turkish citizens can be admitted as lawyers6. These degrees bring a foreign graduate little in Türkiye unless the plan is to work in another country.
How to turn a good degree into a job: a year-by-year plan
The degree is only half the story. Employers hire people, not diplomas, and the employer who files your work permit is usually one who already knows you from an internship or a part-time job.
Year 1: Turkish classes and a first portfolio
Start Turkish in your first semester and build small projects in your field. Both decide whether you get an internship later.
Year 2: Turkish at B2 and legal part-time work
Bachelor's students may work part-time with a work permit once they finish their first year1. Pick a job close to your field.
Years 3 and 4: an internship at a company
A compulsory internship needs a work permit exemption certificate, not a full permit. Choose a company that already hires foreigners.
Graduation: the one-year graduate residence permit
Apply within six months of graduating for the one-time short-term residence permit of up to one year5.
First job: the employer files your work permit
Graduates of Turkish universities may apply for a work permit within one year of graduating1. Exceptional graduates can also aim for the Turkuaz Kart.
Our guide to working while studying in Türkiye explains the permits, fees and deadlines behind each step.
